Phone/ gadget cases/socks

Phone cases or socks are probable the easiest thing to make, just 3 seams,  they particularly lend themselves to embellishment or plain to show off the fabric.

The basic design is easily scaled up or down to fit most basic rectangles.
Step 1    The cover - Measure the phone double the width and add a seam allowance.
Step 2    The lining - repeat step one
Step 3    Cut the wadding slightly shorter than the lining
Step 4    Attach the wadding to the lining (use bondaweb or iron on hemming tape) the purpose of this is to stop the wadding from moving as you make it up
Step 5    Attach the lining to the cover along the top
Step 6    Press and trim the fabric along the join
Step 7    Sew along the short edge and along the long edge
step 8     Tuck the lining inside the cover
Step 9    Add phone and use

This basic design can be embellished with applique or ribbon as desired.

 Happy sewing

Cushions for Christmas!

There I said it the 'C' word, every year I try and make as many gifts a possible for those who I know appreciate the pleasure of having a hand made item.

Last year everyone had a crocheted blanket for Christmas, they also had blankets the year before so this year I'm changing tack slightly.   One brother is having another blanket and the other one is having cushions.

These cushions, I bought feather cushion pads and have made covers.  Both are pillowcase stylie with no buttons or zips and fully machine washable.  The Patterned cover is made from 2 fat quarters and the other is made of corduroy.

Perhaps an unusual choice for a cushion but the texture is nice and it makes for a more robust cover that will last for years.

The background is a crocheted granny blanket, I made for myself, that adds a real splash of colour to the living room.    The squares were sown together months ago but its still waiting for the final finishing sewing in all the loose ends.  My least favorite part! :-( but I think it looks good.

My other brothers blanket is large enough to use as a bedspread, as requested and is made up of larger than usual squares.   There are 2 rounds of each colour making each square twice the normal size.

On my sewing table

Having lost last weekend to a cold I wanted to make the most of this weekend sewing wise.

I had plans to make a dress from scratch to add to my autumn winter wardrobe but my head isn't in the right place to enjoy sewing.  At the moment it would feel like a chore so I cut out two dresses.  Leaving the 'fun' bit for another day when I'm in a good place to sew.

I have a gorgeous tactile needle cord print cut out a sheath dress (simplicity 1754) the picture doesn't inspire me but the line drawing does.  I'm planning version A with long sleeves in my minds eye I can see the completed dress though I may have to lower the neckline a little.

The second dress, I cut out is the shirt dress version of simplicity 1880 in a black cotton with tiny blue flowers.  I'm excited and nervous to sew this, I think it will turn out great but first I have to face my nemesis buttonholes!  A new challenge for me I usually opt for poppers or designs that don't need functional buttons.

Does anyone else do that, have projects cut and ready to go with no real time scale for completion?  Am I alone in thinking that the cutting out process is a necessary evil, the pain before the satisfying bit the sewing?

Let me know Ruth

I won!

I have been reading and enjoying Claire, I want to be a turtles blog for a while now and I jumped at the chance to enter her first giveaway.

I was lucky enough to win the 2 meters of  blue with white spot fabric with the cutest postcard.

The fabric has a silky feel and a lovely drape at the moment I'm not sure what I'm going to make with it yet.  It would make a lovely lining for a jacket or skirt, my mind is buzzing with possibilities.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks :-)

A tale of 3 dresses

3 dresses

A couple of weeks ago I had a week off work started a blog and made 3 dresses for my Autumn/Winter wardrobe. Two cotton long sleeved dresses and a pinafore dress.

The first I've already blogged about a little is another Simplicity 2444 (my 3rd) this time made up in cotton lawn with a lovely simple floral design.

Overall I like the fit better on this version .

Simplicity 2444 version 3

Simplicity 1880

Simplicity 1880 was the 2nd dress in this marathon and though I like the fit on the shoulders and waist the wrap over top suffers a little from gape-age bordering on the indecent!  Certainly not suitable for work to combat this and the family's view that it looks like a house coat I added 4 vintage style buttons to the top.  The jurys still out on wether this one will get worn or revamped into something else.
I love the fabric though.

Simplicity 3673

The third but by no means least was the simplicity 3673 a reproduction of a vintage style.  It will never look quiet as svelte on me as it does on the envelope but i looks good on and is comfortable to wear all day.

Overall i'm pretty happy with the results

What do you think?

Saturday, 7 September 2013

Hi my name is Freetimeroo and I'm addicted to buying fabric....

I went out with a clear plan, buy 2 meters of plain green corduroy for cushion covers and I succeeded.  That's one Christmas present in the works :-)

but...

While I was there 4 other pieces of fabric called to me and begging to come home, I was weak and gave in after much angst.  I have plans for most of it well sort of...

This Chambray is destined to be cushion covers with appliqued initials and flowers for each my nieces for Christmas.

The printed cord and cotton lawn are destined to be dresses.  I'm thinking simplicity 2444, my go to pattern, for the corduroy.

Which leaves the other piece of corduroy a remnant bought because I loved it but now I've got it home I've no idea what to make with it.

More pictures to come of last weeks makes to come

Happy crafting Roo xo
